🌸 ABOUT THIS MONTH'S BOOK
For November, we're reading The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman, the highly anticipated debut novel from Deesha Philyaw, award-winning author of The Secret Lives of Church Ladies.
Scharisse Freeman has come a long way from her humble beginnings. As the wife of a powerful megachurch pastor, she's built a successful business empire, a comfortable life, and a public persona that doesn't always sit well with the church community. Despite her success, acceptance among the other pastors' wives has remained elusive. When she's invited to participate in the prestigious First Lady USA pageant, it seems like her opportunity to finally belong.
But as the competition approaches, a scandal threatens to unravel everything she's worked to build, forcing Scharisse to confront her past and reconsider what she's willing to sacrifice to maintain her place in the world.
💭 Blending sharp social commentary, humor, and complicated relationships, Philyaw explores the intersections of religion, class, sexuality, ambition, and the expectations placed on Black women.
For our book discussion, we'll dig into respectability politics, the tension between public image and private identity, and what it really means to define success and freedom on your own terms.
💬 Come ready to share your thoughts, favorite moments, theories, and insights for an engaging and lively conversation with the LACA community! 💕
📚 Happy reading, and we look forward to seeing you there! ✨
